In this part of my blog, the two movies in which share similarities as mine. 'Obssessed' which is drama and thriller, and 'Scream' which is horror.
OBSSESSED directed by Steve Shill
OBSSESSED directed by Steve Shill
The first film that I chose was 'OBSESSED' a film released 29 May 2009 in the UK. "A successful asset manager,is blissfully happy in his career and in his marriage, but when a temp worker starts stalking him, all the things he's worked so hard for are placed in jeopardy." I chose this movie because the title alone reminded me of the storyline of my film also the movie talks about a rejected love who would not give up until they got what they want, but sadly it result in tradegy, death. The genres of this film is 'Drama' and 'Thriller' two of the genres that my film is going by.The scene which we are using from the movie 'Obssessed' is the fact that a character's love was rejected. This is because I felt that it was the root of all the drama and the tradgey in the film, it is because of this rejected love that everything else in the film happens.
There is tension through out the movie from when the obsessed character comes in, however the tension it at its highest point in the ending scene when the two main female characters are fighting and the Sounds are related to the action, for example when one person is push through a glass door and it breaks we hear the 'SMASH!!' sound (this is known as a digetic sound because both actors and audience can hear it), also there is background music through out the scene adding to our attraction. The Camera Shots involved are two shots, over the shoulder, point of view n close ups but the most camera shot used was the high and low angel shot, this was used during the fight to represent who was wining or who had the upper hand. The camera would be on one character from a low angle so that they would look more powerful and show strength, the low angle was used when someone was losing the fight to show weakness. The Mise-en-Scene contributed a lot because they was all used as weapons during the fight, for example, the lamp in the living room was used to hit another character. The Lighting at the beginning of 'the fighting scene' starts of bright and harsh, we can clearly see both characters, how ever when the setting changes and the fight moves into the Attic, the brightness of the light is lowered, so we cannot see the actors clearly, but we see movement from them, also objects being thrown and chaotic sounds ands to the mystery of who is being hit.

SCREAM SERIES
The second film would b 'SCREAM' a film released 2 May 1997 in the UK. "After an anonymous killer murders two high school lovers, a mysterious rise in fear and rumors rises in a peaceful Californian town, the killer starts killing high school teenagers and one teenage girl becomes the target of a killer who has stalked and killed one of her classmates. The killer known as "ghost face" is the capture of this film." Scream fits in the 'horror' genre (one of which we are going by) but it's much more than that. While the fans get the terror from all the kills, this film also appeals to the rest of the mainstream crowd because It's also a funny movie. But it always has its serious tone as we the audience are always on our tip toes wondering what will happen next;who would be killed next, similarly to my film.
The opening scene really got my attention, the way it was layered out through Editing was unique, we get a taste of the storyline all rolled in to one scene so immediately we the audience knows what the storyline is . There is a scene before the actually titles appear, which is what i used in my film. In the opening of ‘Scream’ the rising of the popcorn creates the tension, the tension slowly builds up as the popcorn rises. The popcorn creates suspense and the audience’s attention catches on because they know something is about to happen.
The Camera Shots in the scene are a mid shot of the first character, then we get a cut-away showing the surroundings (which is her home) and the mise-en-scene such as the telephone, television, tables, the popcorn the kettle and etc, then we get a reaction shot from the character when the other character on the phone say "i want to know who am looking at",then we get a long shot of her running through the house ,then a point of view shot when she looks at the door, the camera begins to shakes showing her unstable mind and fear. The Lighting in this scene is consistently bright and it uses soft light, I believe it relates to the youthfulness of the first character and also it appeals to it targeted audience which are mostly teenagers known as 'cult audience', with this audience type it is best to focus on how to make the film attractive and the brightness of this scene does by making it clear and colourful.
The digetic Sounds of the popcorn cooking and the boiling kettles, are in the background through out the scene. As soon as the mode of the scene changes, when the character becomes afraid of the conversation with the stranger caller,a very creep music is played in the back ground (known as 'non-digetic' which privileges the audience over the actors because only the audience can hear it) When there is a jumpy part where the character screams we get a quick beat adding to the effects. The Mise-En-Scene in the scene are the, popcorn, telephone, knifes, the boyfriend character tied up in the chair and general housing equipments such as chairs, tables, bookshelf, swimming pool etc. We also took from the movie 'Scream' the sequence of killing action that goes on,because in our film not only is the stalker obsessed with the girls he meets but also he kills them.
